# Hearts

Show lives or health for challenge runs and take them away live from chat, the editor or your phone.

**Hearts** shows how many lives you have left. Lose one and a mark empties; lose them all and a game-over moment plays. Perfect for hardcore runs, "three strikes" challenges or letting chat punish your mistakes.

Show one mark per life or a single mark that drains as you lose lives.

## Add it

Click **Add** in the toolbar (or press `kbd:W`) and pick **Hearts** under **Games & Interactive**.

Set **Total lives**: how many lives a refill gives you.

Choose a **Layout**: **Marks (one per life)** or **Vessel (one filling mark)**.

Pick a look with **Choose a look** and give it a **Name** if you like.

## Control it live

Select the widget and a **Lives** stepper and **Refill** appear above it. Use them in the [Deck](/docs/deck) or on a [Stream Deck](/docs/stream-deck) too.

## Chat commands

The default command word is `life`. You and your mods can use:

| `!lifeset 3` | Set lives directly |
| `!lifereset` | Refill to the maximum |
| `!lifeempty` | Empty all lives |
| `!lifemax 7` | Change the lives cap |
| `!lifecolor #22d3ee` | Change the accent color |

Change the word under **Command word** and who may use it under **Who can use commands**.

## Tips

- **Keep lost lives visible** shows empty marks, so viewers see how many you lost.
- **Show count ("3 / 5")** or **Show** set to **Count only (3 / 5)** works well in a tight corner.
- With 7 or more lives, a small **Max width (px)** wraps the marks to a second row.
- Add a **Lose sound**, **Gain sound** and **Empty sound** for extra drama.
- **Game-over effect** chooses between a full moment and a subtle pulse.

## Looks

Pick a look under **Look** in the settings card. Every look is a complete style; colors and fonts you set yourself stay on top. 15 looks are available:

## Command reference

Every chat command this widget understands, with the default command names. Values in angle brackets are placeholders, for example a number.
